Management plans for Carpinteria Salt Marsh (Ferren et al., 2000) and Goleta Slough conceived by Wayne Ferren and his colleagues offered valuable models for this document. Mark Holmgren greatly appreciates the many discussions and far-ranging counsel offered by Wayne over the 17 years of our association.

Mike McCormack allowed us to use work products from the Bridle Ridge development effort. Additionally, Jeff Bermant (the developer behind the current proposal to place homes on San Marcos Foothills) and Penfield and Smith Engineering shared existing data on physical features of the land.

Maps: Wayne Ferren assisted us greatly in recognizing the role of geology in the formation of the landforms present on the Foothills and in identifying wetlands and wetland plants.

Rachel Tierney’s and Susan Van Atta’s excellent grassland map from the Bridle Ridge Open Space and Habitat Management Plan forms part of the data we present here in our grasslands map. David Magney laid a marvelous foundation for the inventory work through his biological investigations in the course of the Bridle Ridge EIR. He has continued to lend us advice and expertise.

Field: Although most of the field observations and data collection were performed by the SMFC Resource Monitoring Committee (Melissa Kelly, Chair; Mark Holmgren; and Morgan Ball), assistance came from local nature watchers. We appreciate the efforts provided by Harris Meisel, Wayne Ferren, Cyril Schönbächler, John Storrer, Darlene Chirman, Brooke Bulkley, Dave Compton, Kevin Knight, Guy Tingos, Liz Mason, Pat McNulty, Chris Farmer, David Pritchett, Bill Murdoch, Lawrence E. Hunt, Zev Labinger, Mike Palladini, Gina Butala, Jodi Henry, Ron Hirst, Jeff Chemnick, Steve Rothstein, Kate Symonds, Haley Ross, Joan Lentz, Joan Hardie, Jessie Quinn, Paul Collins, and Karin Niles.

In particular, Darlene Chirman provided assistance with the botanical work. Cyril Schönbächler contributed many mammal and bird observations; Liz Mason and Harris Meisel documented the activities of nesting kites and other animals; and Brooke Bulkley contributed sightings of Burrowing Owl and other animals.

Text: Elias Chiacos, Carrie Brown and Karin Niles contributed to The Land’s Story. Julie Kummel and Melissa Kelly prepared Appendix F, the Glossary of Scientific Terminology.

Assisting the Plan Committee, Brooke Bulkley, Julie Kummel, Porter Abbott, and Marc Chytilo offered extensive comments on the various drafts of the document. Lansing Duncan gave us insightful comments on early drafts. Lisa Pompa pulled together the final layout and design of the booklet, and coordinated with the printers.

Goals and Policies: We especially appreciate the participation of our support groups and the many members of the public whose input at public meetings in summer 2000 formed the basis for the policies set forth in the Stewardship section. These policies were later organized for the initial draft of this Plan by Pat Saley, who, with Allison Cooke, also facilitated those meetings.

Additional appreciation: The extraordinary generosity of Morgan Ball has been most important in producing this document. Zev Labinger’s incredible watercolor “Coast
