Appendix 2. Sensitive Ecological
Associations at 'San Marcos Foothills': San Marcos Foothills is distinguished
by the presence of two ecological guilds that are strongly represented by large
numbers of species and individuals. These guild members are connected by their
shared ecological requirements and, to some degree, their interdependence on one
another. Both of these guilds at San Marcos Foothills are unique in their species
richness in the Goleta/Santa Barbara area. What is present on the San Marcos Foothills
provides one measure of what have been present historically on other large open
spaces in the Goleta/Santa Barbara area.

Small mammals (voles, gophers, various mice species, Woodrat, Meriam's
Chipmunk, and Gray Squirrel) are present year-round. These support the persistent
and rich bird of prey community. Protecting the birds-of-prey assemblage
requires an understanding of the ecosystem processes, which in turn requires protection
of the corridors that allow small mammals to move to and from areas surrounding
the San Marcos Foothills. |
